Your Guide to a Great First Round of Golf at Hideaway Hills

The thought of playing your first round of golf can feel like a mix of excitement and nerves. We get it. The open fairways, the quiet focus of other players, the unique language of the game, it can seem a little intimidating. But here’s a secret: every single golfer, even the pros, had a first day. At Hideaway Hills, we believe that this milestone should be an amazing experience, not a stressful one, and we pride ourselves on being a welcoming course for players of all skill levels. So, if you’re ready to take that next step, you’ve come to the right place. This guide is for you.

Before You Arrive: The Essentials Checklist

Feeling prepared is the first step to feeling confident. You don’t need a trunk full of expensive gear, just a few key items to get you started.

  • Clubs: If you don’t have your own set, don’t worry! Our Pro Shop offers quality rental sets. Just let us know you’ll need some when you book your tee time.
  • Balls & Tees: You’re going to lose some golf balls. It’s a rite of passage! We recommend starting with at least a dozen. You can grab balls and tees right here in our Pro Shop.
  • What to Wear: Golf has a traditional dress code, but it’s all about comfort and respect for the game. For men, a collared shirt and slacks or Bermuda-style shorts are perfect. For women, a collared shirt (with or without sleeves) with shorts, a skirt/skort, or slacks is the way to go. As for footwear, golf shoes are great, but comfortable sneakers are perfectly fine for your first round.
  • The Little Things: The Poconos are beautiful, but the sun can be strong. We recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. A water bottle is also a great idea to stay hydrated throughout your round.

Checking In: Your First Stop at the Pro Shop

When you arrive at Hideaway Hills, your first stop will be our Pro Shop. This is the hub of all golf activity. Inside, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff who are here to help you get your day started.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Head inside and check-in at the counter. Let the staff know your name and tee time.
  2. This is where you’ll pay for your round (known as “green fees”) and a golf cart if you’re using one. This is also where you can pick up rental clubs or buy any last-minute items you might have forgotten.
  3. Get your cart key. Our staff will point you in the right direction to find your assigned cart.

Feel free to ask questions! Whether you need directions to the first tee or advice on which golf balls to buy, we’re happy to help.

On the Course: A Beginner’s Guide to Golf Etiquette

Golf etiquette isn’t about stuffy, complicated rules. It’s about safety, maintaining the beautiful course, and making sure everyone has a good time.

Here are four simple tips to remember:

  1. Pace of Play: The general goal is to keep up with the group playing in front of you. Don’t rush your shots, but be ready to hit when it’s your turn. If a faster group comes up behind you, it’s courteous to pull your cart to the side and wave them through. It’s a friendly gesture that everyone appreciates.
  2. Safety First: This is the most important rule. Never stand directly in front of or behind someone when they are swinging. Before you take a shot, make sure the group ahead is safely out of range. If you hit a wild shot that’s heading toward other people, yell “Fore!” as loud as you can. It’s the universal warning signal in golf.
  3. Respect the Course: We work hard to keep our course beautiful, and you can help! If you’re in a sand trap (a “bunker”), use the nearby rake to smooth out your footprints before you leave. Try to keep the golf cart on the designated paths when possible and never drive it onto the putting greens.
  4. The Golden Rule: The simplest tip is to just be aware of the other players in your group. Stay quiet while they are hitting and celebrate their good shots with them. Golf is a social game, and a little encouragement goes a long way.

Enjoying the Hideaway Hills Experience

Your first round isn’t about shooting a record score. It’s about enjoying the journey. Our course winds through the beautiful Pocono landscape, offering scenic views and a peaceful escape. It’s designed to be a fair challenge for experienced players but forgiving and enjoyable for those just starting out.

Take a moment to soak in the scenery, laugh at the goofy shots (we all have them), and celebrate the great ones. And when your round is over, the experience doesn’t have to end. The “19th hole” is a term for the clubhouse bar or restaurant, and we invite you to join us for a well-earned drink or a bite to eat to reflect on your day.

Your Adventure Awaits

Every golfer’s journey starts with a single swing. We are thrilled that you’re considering making Hideaway Hills the place where your journey begins. Remember, the goal is to have fun, learn a little, and enjoy a beautiful day outdoors. Don’t wait to create that memory.
